Description
The provision of high standard clinical care for the patients for whom she is responsible, clinical care includes optimal quality obstetrical and neonatal nursing care to mothers and babies within the available resources in the Delivery Room.
Provides the necessary maternity care to her patients to meet the requirements outlined above, including routine care, preventive measures, detection of abnormal progress of pregnancy or abnormal conditions in the mother of infant, the procurement of appropriate medical advice and the execution of emergency measures as required.
Carries out the necessary examination at the prescribed interval.
Cares for the mother during labour and monitors the condition of the fetus using clinical and technical means and assists the doctor at delivery.
Midwives are allowed to administer drugs in their extended role if previously agreed, have attended a course on ?Drug Administration? and be certified for the individual Staff Midwife.
Examines the neonate and takes immediate steps to resuscitate if necessary.
Provides immediate and progressing postnatal care whilst the mother is in the unit.
Ensures that support, instructions and advice are provided to the mother for the continued care of their babies.
Ensures that doctors? orders and patient management plans are followed and that appropriate steps are taken, including immediate notification of the resident in charge or doctor on-call, of any deterioration from the expected course of the patient?s conditions.
Maintains continuity of care at the take-over and handover reports, ensuring that the communication is clear at all times.
Ensures that the appropriate records of the patients? progress are maintained according to the unit?s policies and procedures.
Promotion, teaching and encouragement of ante-natal and postnatal health education to patients and their relatives.
Assists in the assessment of performance of the staff in the unit.
Ensures knowledge and understanding of department policies and procedures concerning CPR, fire, major disaster, etc.
Assists in the provision of orientation, guidance and direction, and training to new staff.
Ensures self updating in all areas of midwifery care.
Ensures that the necessary financial records are maintained for the Finance Department.
Staff should be competent as follows:
Provides appropriate newborn care and observation including resuscitation or assistance in resuscitation.
Provide safe and effective care for pregnant women during labour and immediate postpartum period.
Provides appropriate care and patient education in the prevention of thrombo-embolic events during labour, delivery and post delivery.
Provides care and observation for the patient requiring Entonox inhalation analgesia (Self Administration).
Provides appropriate care to woman with Diabetes labour.
Provides appropriate care to a woman with IUFD or Mid-trimester abortion in labour and delivery.
Provides care for the patient receiving epidural analgesia.
Assess fetal heart rate patterns using the electronic fetal monitor and provides appropriate care.
Provides appropriate care and intervention in the management of obstetric emergencies.
