Job overview:

The Power System Planning Engineer will be responsible for conducting comprehensive power system planning studies, including techno-economic analysis (perform cost-benefit analysis), and to ensure the stability, reliability, and efficiency of the 400kV transmission network. The role involves developing methodologies for various studies, analyzing power system data, and coordinating with consultants for specialized studies. The Power System Planning Engineer will work closely with the Power System Planning Manager to develop network plans and provide recommendations for the future expansion and optimization of the 400kV transmission network.

Key responsibilities:

Power System Modeling and Analysis:

  • Develop, run, and analyze power system models using software tools such as PSSE, PSCAD, and PLEXOS.
  • Conduct technical studies, including load flow analysis, short circuit analysis, stability studies, and contingency analysis to evaluate the performance and reliability of the transmission network.
  • Perform techno-economic analyses to identify optimal network expansion plans and integration of new projects.
  • Experience in resource adequacy and generation planning.

Data Collection and Assessment:

  • Collect, validate, and analyze power system data to support planning studies and network assessments.
  • Evaluate existing network performance and identify potential areas for improvement or expansion.

Study Scoping and Methodology Development:

  • Scope and define study objectives, requirements, and deliverables in collaboration with the Network Planning Manager and other stakeholders.
  • Develop and refine methodologies for conducting various network planning studies, ensuring they align with industry standards and best practices.

Coordination with Consultants and Stakeholders:

  • Coordinate with external consultants to manage specialized studies, including reviewing study proposals, overseeing study progress, and evaluating final deliverables.
  • Communicate study findings, recommendations, and technical insights to internal teams, management, and external stakeholders.

Reporting and Documentation:

  • Prepare comprehensive study reports, technical documentation, and presentations for management and regulatory authorities.
  • Maintain up-to-date records of all planning activities, data analysis, and study outcomes to ensure transparency and accountability.

Stakeholder Engagement and Negotiation:

  • Engage with various stakeholders, including member states, to discuss network planning strategies, study results, and future development plans.
  • Support the negotiation process with stakeholders on matters related to network planning and project implementation.

Education:

The Research Assistant is mainly responsible for designing and constructing experimental setups related to the applied fields of renewable energy systems, DC microgrids, and electric vehicles at the Joint Smart Grids and Electric Vehicles R&D Center (JSEC) in the College of Engineering. You will also design industry-ready showcase prototypes, develop innovative solutions with high technology readiness, and help in conducting research. Working collaboratively with the JSEC director and other team members, you will explore the integration and optimization of these technologies to shape a bright and sustainable future.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops experimental and industry-ready PCB-fabricated prototype solutions involving power electronics, embedded systems, and computer communication.
  • Applies control, modeling and parameter identification, and embedded systems in developing innovative solutions.
  • Leverages expertise in modeling and design to construct lab-based and showcase DC microgrids with hierarchical control strategies and their digital twin in simulation.
  • Prepares research materials, including reports, presentations, and grant proposals.
  • Researches and develops battery energy storage systems (BESS) management and active balancing techniques also photovoltaic system (PV) modeling electric machines modeling, parameter identification, and control.
  • Performs logistical tasks related to the management of the labs.
  • Helps with research activities in the fields of renewable energy systems, DC microgrids, and/or electric vehicles.
