Job Overview

An HR Generalist works on people-related tasks and activities in an organization. As the name suggests, HR Generalists support the business from an HR perspective, managing relevant internal and external activities.

HR Generalists manage the employee lifecycle, including employee relations, recruitment, performance management, reward management, and other Human Resources functions in collaboration with HR Specialists. In organizations that do not employ HR Specialists, HR Generalists may own these processes and manage them fully.

HR Generalists wear multiple hats in a day while working with all levels of employees. One day, they could be working with the top management, advising on employee engagement strategy. The next day, they could be onboarding new employees into the organization, depending on the business need.

However, their role varies based on a company’s HR model. If the organization follows an HR business partnering model, HR Generalists support them in partnering with the business leaders. In organizations with no HRBPs, the ownership and accountability of HR Generalists may be higher. In such cases, they directly work with business leaders.

HR Generalist responsibilities

  • Supporting top management in decision-making related to people management. This involves applying HR best practices and devising strategies in line with company goals and objectives, ensuring company growth as well as employee wellbeing. 
  • Managing or supporting HR-related processes, such as employee relations, recruitment, performance managementcompensation & benefitssuccession planning, and learning & development. In organizations where HR Specialists are employed, HR Generalists play a support role with the above processes.
  • Managing employee relations, including employee grievances and disciplinaries. Furthermore, providing advice on employment legislation and keeping up-to-date with employment law while maintaining cordial relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Leveraging people analytics and reporting techniques to understand people management indicators. Then, using data to identify solutions to complex people problems.
  • Leading or supporting recruitment by identifying relevant candidates, connecting them with the hiring manager, interviewing them, conducting reference checks, issuing offers, drafting contracts, and onboarding them efficiently.
  • Participating in the development or improvement of people management processes and related HR technology projects.

Qualifications

Most organizations require candidates to have at least a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related subject. Many employers also ask for a Master’s degree, while others may consider it desirable.

Key Responsibilities

1. Develop and update training programs and materials, customizing content for different audiences.

4. Maintain accurate training records and generate reports on program outcomes.

5. Stay current with industry trends and integrate new information into training content.

8. Collect feedback from trainees to improve training content and delivery methods.

11. Manage training materials, equipment, and facilities, ensuring they are up-to-date.

12. Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, standards, and organizational policies while maintaining confidentiality.

  • Identify the factors and assets that may impact the outcome of a project
  • Distinguish between organizational systems
  •  Understand the purpose and activities of a Project Management Office
  • Recognize the hierarchy of projects, programs, and portfolios

Module3:Role of the Project Manager 

  • State the primary functions of a project manager
  • Understand a project manager’s sphere of influence
  •  Identify the major elements included in the PMI triangle
  • Recognize the difference between leadership and management

Module4:Project Integration Management 

  • Understand the seven project management processes in the project integration management knowledge area
  • Identify the input, tools, techniques, and outputs defined in the seven processes in project integration management
  •  Understand the purpose of project integration management and the project manager’s role within it
  •  Identify concepts and procedures related to project change management
  •  Identify tailoring considerations in project integration management and recognize key documents
  •  Identify methods for project integration and knowledge management

Module5: Project Scope Management 

  • Understand the six project management processes in the project scope management knowledge area
  •  Identify the Input, tools, techniques and outputs defined in the six processes in the project scope
    management
  •  Identify key concepts and tailoring consideration for project scope management, and key roles in scope management
  •  Identify the purpose and elements of a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) for both Product and Project scope
  • Understand project scope management for agile/adaptive projects, including the use of prototypes.

Module6: Project Schedule Management

  • Define the six project management processes in the project schedule management knowledge area
  • Identify the Input, tools, techniques and outputs defined in the six processes in project schedule management
  •  Solve simple network diagrams problems and perform basic scheduling calculations
  • Identify considerations for agile/adaptive environments in project schedule management

Module7:  Project Cost Management

  • Understand the four project management processes in the project cost management knowledge area
  • Identify the Input, tools, techniques and outputs defined in the four processes in project cost management
  •  Identify key concepts in project cost management, including tailoring and special considerations for agile/adaptive environments
  •  Understand and apply basic forecasting and earned value methods for project cost management

Module8:Project Quality Management

  • Understand the three project management processes in the project quality management knowledge area
  • Identify the Input, tools, techniques and outputs defined in the three quality management processes
  •  Understand the reasons for and approaches to adapting quality management in different project environments
  •  Identify quality tools and approaches for continuous improvement

Module9. Project Resource Management 

  • Define the six project management processes in the project resource management knowledge area
  •  Identify the Input, tools, techniques and outputs defined in the six processes in project resource management
  •  Identify key concepts and trends in project resource management, including tailoring and special considerations for agile/adaptive environments
  •  Identify techniques for developing a team, managing conflict, and resolving resource-related problems
  •  Understand the components of a resource management plan and data representation techniques or managing project resources

Module10: Project Communication Management (10%)

  • Understand the three project management processes in the project communication management knowledge area
  • Identify the Input, tools, techniques and outputs defined in the three project
    communication management processes

Module12: Project Procurement Management

  • Understand the three processes in the project procurement management knowledge area

  •  Identify key concepts and tailoring considerations for project procurement management, including trends and emerging practices
  • Identify various types of contracts, agreements, and source selection methods

Module13: Project Stakeholder Management (9%) 

  • Understand the four project management processes in the project stakeholder
    management knowledge area
  • Identify the Input, tools, techniques and outputs defined in the four project stakeholder management processes
  • Recognize key stakeholders’ roles and needs
  •  Identify the key concepts and benefits of stakeholder management
